Doncaster Community Recycling Partnership is a Not-For-Profit community organisation with charitable aims and objectives.
Our Vision
To encourage and enable the Doncaster Communities to develop long-term environmentally sustainable practices through establishing the local social economy in waste. This means that by collecting householders recyclables in a kerbside collection, for sale to recycling manufacturers, we can plough the money back into expanding the scheme and therefore;
- Create even more local jobs
- Improve our environment
- Promote Community Action and Awareness towards recycling
Set up in 2000, DCRP was designed to address the ever growing need for sustainable waste practices, whilst maximising benefit to the community by creating jobs, and empowering communities to help themselves. In April 2002, the project commenced its pilot year with funding from SRB, Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and Sita Environmental Trust.
Serving 10500 homes in Barnby Dun, Kirk Sandall, Armthorpe and Bentley. The schemes immediate success prompted expansion into Fishlake areas, Dunscroft, Dunsville, Hatfield, Hatfield Woodhouse, Thorne and Moorends, all within the projects pilot year totalling 26000 households in total. We now collect from 60,000 households within the eastern side of Doncaster and employing 46 people. DCRP Won Project of the Year at the Resource awards in May 2003. In 2004, DCRP won Mayor Winters PRIDE (Personal Responsibility in Doncasters Environment) Award. DCRP was also honoured in the Vehicles and Plant Awards 2005, placed as a finalist in the national award of 'Kerbside Collection Crew of the Year'. In the same year, DCRP was recognised as finalists in Doncaster Chamber Business Awards, being shortlisted for 3 awards - 'Commitment to Social Responsibility', 'Customer Service Award' and 'Investor in Skills Award'.
The Green Box Kerbside Recycling Scheme
Green Boxes are distributed to every home in participating areas. If you think you should have a Green Box but don't, e-mail us from the contacts page or call us on the help-line 01302 849068.
Your Green Box will be collected weekly from 8:00am until 4:00pm on the same day as your normal bin day. There may be some collections that differ from the normal bin day but this will be stated in the instruction leaflet accompanying the box. Leave the box in a safe position where it can be clearly seen from the roadside, i.e. on a wall, by your gate or on a safe position on the kerbside.
What can go in the box?
Paper - All types of newspaper, magazines, junk-mail, catalogues and yellow pages. We are now able to accept thin cardboard, i.e. cereal box card, greeting cards. We can also accept envelopes, although please ensure envelope windows are removed. Shredded paper can also be placed in the green box, please ensure this is bagged securely. If you wish to separate the paper from the other materials within the box using a carrier bag this is fine, your bag will be left inside the Green box for re-use. Paper is sent to Cutts Brothers in Doncaster, where it is processed and sent away to be recycled into paper again.
Glass - Bottles and jars of all colours. Rinsed clean for hygiene reasons. Please note, drinking glasses, ceramic, and window glass include different materials and cannot be recycled in Green Box. For safety reasons please do not put broken glass in the box, this can cause injury to our operatives. Glass is sent to Berrymans Glass, in South Kirkby where it is made into new glass bottles or used as cullet for roads.
Metals - Aluminium cans, foil and food trays, steel tins and cans. We will take aerosol cans, although please remove plastic lids. Please leave un-bagged in the box for safety reasons. Once back at our depot, the cans are separated using an overband magnet. The separated cans are then crushed and baled and distributed to each re-processor. Aluminium is sent to Novelis to be made into new aluminium, and steel is sent to Corus to be made into new.
Textiles - Clean and dry clothes, shoes in pairs, bags, sheets and curtains, etc. We cannot accept pillows or duvets. Please reuse a bag to store the items inside or alongside box to keep them dry. Clothes in good condition are sent to Africa and the third world, while clothes that are not up to standard are sent to be recycled. A donation is made to the Childrens Heart Federation for each tonne of clothes that are recycled.
Inkjet Printer Cartridges - Empty cartridges from Hewlett Packard, Lexmark and Canon. All these items can be put in the Green box. Please do not place refilled cartridges into the green box, as these cannot be refilled. Please return them directly to your supplier who will refill them for you. Original cartridges are refilled by a local company.
Mobile Phones - old unwanted mobile phones can be placed into your green box. We do not require the charger or any other accessories. Please bag your unwanted phone to protect it from damage. Mobile Phones are sent to EMC, where re-usable handsets are sent to developing countries, such as Ghana and Uganda. Handsets that arent suitable for use in these countries are broken down and the individual components recycled.
Our wagons are manned by three recycling operatives, the materials are sorted on the wagons into the separate stillages then taken back to the Bootham lane depot where they are stored until the recycling manufacturers collect for reprocessing. Although these materials are considered rubbish by most, they are valuable and are sold by the tonne. The money generated from sales is ploughed back into the organisation to ensure the efficient running of the scheme.
When in doubt please give us a call and we'll be happy to help with any recycling issues, the more we can recycle the better off Doncaster and the entire planet will be.

FAQ's
Question - I live in a flat, and dont have any facilities for recycling, why is this?
Answer - Due to the nature of our collection, we require the boxes to be on the kerbside of your property. The nature of most flats waste collections use a central point for the waste to be deposited. At present, DCRP are unable to collect waste from flats due to collection problems, although the design of some flats allows us to place some boxes out for residents to place there recyclables into. If you live in a flat, and there is a general consensus that recycling would work, please contact us, by phone on 01302 849068 or via e-mail.
Question - Why can't we put plastic in the Green Box for Recycling?
Answer - Due to the complexity of plastic recycling, at the origination of the original scheme, plastics were not included because of:
- There are many different types of plastic, for example, the lids on pop bottles are a completely different type of plastic to the bottle itself
- These plastics would have to be hand sorted into all the different groups.
- Plastic is bulky but light in weight causing storage and transportation problems.
- To include plastics would have been costly, and funding at that time was simply not available.
We are actively seeking looking at plastics but the same problems remain, plus:
- our vehicles would have to be modified
- expensive baling machinery would be required
- poor selling price in the market place.
Question - Can I have another box? My Green Box is filling before the end of the week.
Answer - Yes! We will collect all you can give us! To request an extra box, call or e-mail your request.
Question - My Green Box has gone missing, can I have a new one?
Answer - Yes, call or e-mail us with your address details and we will deliver as soon as possible. In the meantime, bag up your recyclables and we will collect as normal if left in view for our Recycling Operatives.
Question - Where can I recycle other items?
Answer - Car batteries, fridges, freezers, oil, scrap metal, green waste, and cardboard can be recycled at the council's Household Waste Recycling Centres. Furniture and electrical goods (apart from fridges and gas cookers and subject to health and safety regulations) will be taken by Doncaster Refurnish, who can be contacted on 01302 329955. For all other recycling enquiries, please contact Doncaster Council Community First on 01302 736000.
